ARCHITECTURE – Studio Weave
Conceived as a flexible and creative space for those wishing to connect with nature, their art or craft, Made of Sand, originally a stone cottage, has been turned into a place where one can work and spend time with family and friends.
Studio Weave has designed a two storey cubic addition with a geometric timber façade and large glazed apertures, which sits harmoniously in the rural landscape while adopting a contemporary aesthetic.
A restored stone stair bookends the new space between the cottage and hillside.
The new 85 square meter wing around the old cottage has been wrapped, resulting in a floorplan of two tessellating L-shape zones that connect internally.
A stainless steel galley kitchen lit by overhead and clerestory windows leads to the ground floor bedroom suite, which opens onto the large wildflower meadow at the front of the property.
Materials and craft play a key role in anchoring Made of Sand in its setting, with Red Western Cedar panelling silvers in tandem with the surrounding woodland timbers outside and natural materials including clay, terracotta, brass and douglas fir plywood inside.
Rust-coloured clay walls softly curve into door frames. The contrast between materials, old and new, in and out, creates a distinct sense of rest and relaxation.
Made of Sand is highly insulated and soundproofed to allow artists and children creative freedom during retreats and family holidays.
