Architecture: Maxim Calujac

Villa Domes is located in a small holiday village near Chisinau, Moldova. Designed for a family of 4 people, it has an area for leisure and a green zone.

The leisure area includes a terrace, a pool and a hearth. Due to the large stained-glass windows, it is visually interconnected with the living room.

The green zone is a garden, the shade of which makes it a comfortable place for children to play in the summer and which, through the stained-glass windows, “penetrates” inside the house and becomes an integral element of the interior.

The main focus of the building is the entrance. The floating volume of the concrete portal, in addition to aesthetics, has a constructive function – it provides overall rigidity, thereby softening the metal frame of the house.

The sculptural form of the concrete highlights the conciseness of the planning solution and the simplicity of the “Corten” facade. The ”domes” – truncated pyramids of the roof – play a critical role in the three-dimensional solution.

Serving as light lanterns, the “domes” reveal the rhythm and solidity of the structure, and form inside a voluminous, bright space.

The interior walls in all the residential areas are covered with wooden panels. Contrasting with large cold glazing, this solution, in addition to comfort, creates an increased space perception.

All the furniture in the project was designed by the architect and is made of the materials used in the decoration of the walls, thanks to which the furniture “dissolves” into the interior and does not stand out.

The accent pieces are the paintings and sculptures. They bring dynamics and contrast to the calm interior of the house.

The planning solution is centric, the entire layout develops from one room – the living room. In the absence of corridors, it is the central point for all interconnections. All the bedrooms face the garden southeast. The technical and utility rooms are located closer to the road, while the master zone is in the garden in the back of the yard.

Despite the small area of the site, inside the villa there is a sense of proximity to nature – it feels like a “living” canvas framed in stained-glass windows. While building contrasts with the surrounding area, the materials used – corten, wood, concrete – change, mature over time.

The smooth lines of the architectural solution, the conciseness of the interior space and the lightness of the landscape organically integrate the villa into the natural environment and act as the basis for human interaction with the space and the building.
